What is a CBN grinding wheel?

A CBN grinding wheel is a super-abrasive tool made from synthetic cubic boron nitride, the second-hardest material after diamond. It is used mainly to grind hardened steels and sharpen high-speed steel tools. CBN wheels run cooler than aluminum oxide or silicon carbide wheels and hold their shape, so they are commonly used without dressing or truing.

CBN Grinding Wheel FAQ

What is a CBN grinding wheel used for?

A CBN grinding wheel is used to grind hardened steels and sharpen high-speed steel tools such as cold saw blades. CBN is synthetic cubic boron nitride, the second-hardest material after diamond.

Do CBN grinding wheels need dressing?

Generally no. CBN wheels hold their shape and are used without dressing or truing.

How do I know which CBN wheel fits my machine?

Start with bore and diameter, then profile and thickness. Our listed wheels use 6mm, 20mm and 32mm bores. If you are unsure, call 800.397.8511.

Do you carry wheels that are not listed?

Yes, we can often source other wheels, including chamfering, chip breaker/notch and A Grind style wheels. Call 800.397.8511 or send an inquiry with your machine and the profile you need.

Can you sharpen my cold saw blades instead?

Yes. We offer CNC saw blade sharpening.
